Super Ads

For those Twitter friends out there, it’s no secret that I mostly watched the Super Bowl so I wouldn’t miss a moment of the new GLEE episode. But I also love weighing in on the new commercials! And since Ellen DeGeneres was pulling for the Packers I was happy to see them win. Today I want to weigh-in on the commercials, and since we prefer talking about the average-consumer point-of-view, I’d love to know which ads were most memorable to you.ย  Anything that made you laugh? Cry? That you were talking about at work on Monday?

Obviously the VW commercial with the young Darth Vader was a hit. They even made it to the Today Show this week. And Eminem’s appearance in the Chrysler commercial centered around Detroit was moving. People were certainly interested in selling cars this year! Chevrolet brought the entire cast of GLEE in for their story-laced commercial.

Call me crazy, but the most memorable to me today, three days after watching Super Bowl XLV, was the Verizon iPhone commercial. I’ll admit that I drank the Apple koolaid and I don’t see how I can go back. After years with Verizon, and my new addiction to Apple gadgets, I am so excited about being on Verizon with an iPhone. I also liked how they took something simple (consumers desire for consistent service that everyone keeps talking about) and made a high-quality, but not flashy commercial.

What about you?

Uptown Bound

To get to NYC in a timely [and responsible] fashion some sweet friends of mine have opened their home to me. Literally. They live about an hour & some change outside the city and they told me to come and stay with them until I got my feet underneath me. Well I am happy to announce that I will be *officially* residing in the City as of March 1!ย  (I say “officially” because I’ve been spending a fair amount of time there with good friends who have opened their homes to me, but now I have my own where I can stay.)

I knew this would happen: I’ll be so sad to leave my sweet friends here in PA.ย  They’re my second family & will certainly remain this even once I’m in the City.

As for the new apartment: I’ll be sharing a sublet in Washington Heights with a sweet girl named Joy. I’m excited to meet her, and only the craziest of stories could have crossed our paths. Or the good Lord wanted it to be. (I would lean toward the latter.) Thanks for praying, encouraging and loving me. It’s amazing to believe it’s actually happening.

Mandy & I went to the City last week to check out the digs.

My sweet Northeastern family: Luke, Mandy & Emma on Emma's 1st birthday!

Bucket list

Thanks to my friend Angel I created a Bucket List of sorts years ago before the “Bucket List” movie came out. Basically, before it was cool. Admittedly, though, it was not my idea. I just have a cutting-edge cool friend. ๐Ÿ™‚ Or two or three. It was formerly known as my “things-to-do-before-I-die” list, but as that’s a mouthful & “Bucket List” is more commonly know I think I’ll switch titles.

I’m happy to say that I’m in the midst of one: moving to NYC. It’s a lot more exciting and took a lot longer than I ever imagined, but I wouldn’t change anything. Many of the items on my Bucket List are NYC specific, so I’m excited to accomplish them and share with you.

Do you have a Bucket List? I hope so. It makes me feel productive while having fun, one of the many reasons I love this idea. -EL

This was NOT on the list but it did happen last week! My car more covered in snow than ever.

Groupon Competition

I’ve been seeing some interesting stories go around about rising competitors for Groupon lately. This is of particular interest to me as I love Groupon. It’s a great way to get a great deal, & with the mobile app all I have to do is click “purchase” when I want to buy it, and then flash that code when I’m ready to use it. (This is after you enter your credit card and register, which I did online.)

Back in December Groupon garnered a ton of press after turning down Google’s $6 Billion buyout offer. Many thought they were brilliant to turn them down, and Google might be glad now as they are [allegedly] launching their own daily deal with “Google Offers”. As a gmail user (& advocate!) I’m personally stoked to hear this, & look forward to adding them to my list of deals to check. Daily. (Pun intended).

Living Social is the big-man-or-woman-on-campus I keep hearing about.ย  Mashable published a story today about this, stating that Living Social is “giving Groupon a run for its money.”

As an avid Groupon user myself, and long-term bargain lover, I thought I’d see what the differences are from an average consumer perspective. So far, I’ve found little to differentiate the two. Thanks to an investment from Amazon, Living Social is able to be a big competitor with the rapidly-growing Groupon, which means more great deals for us! Cha-ching.

I downloaded the mobile app for Living Social, which looks about as straight-forward and easy-to-use as Groupon’s:

Living Social's Daily Deal for 1/28

Groupon's Daily Deal for 1/28

With Google Offers on the way (et al.) it looks like I’ll have lots of daily deal apps to check! Maybe we should make an app that produces a side-by-side comparison everyday. If you know how to build apps feel free to steal my idea. Just let me know about it. ๐Ÿ™‚

What about you? Do you LOVE Groupon? Have you found any benefit to the others? -EL

Learning through Transition

Life changes a lot. You move, friends move, family members pass away — sometimes sudden & tragic, sometimes you have a chance to know, but it’s always sad. My biggest regret through all of my transitions is that I took people for granted. Take Luke & Mandy, my wonderful generous hosts who are both fun to be around and full of wisdom they’re willing to share.ย  They lived in the Atlanta area for several years & I was so sad to see them go, but while they were around I didn’t take advantage of that. Thankfully, God is crazy & has brought me to a place where I can see them lots. A second chance. I’m loving every minute, and doing my best to soak it up.

Sara Groves has a song where she says, “Love to me is when you put down that one last thing… I have something better to do.. nothing can come between me & you.” I agree with that. In a world of lists & more to do than one has time for, I hope we can leave a couple of things unchecked for what will be eternal: investing yourself in your friends and your surroundings. So wherever you are, look around & spend time with your friends. You never know when they might move away, and you won’t want to regret what you did with the time you had them around. I’m missing my friends & fam in Gainesville, but so thankful that I did this: spent many hours with a beautiful community.ย  The time is never enough, it always feels too short, but I made many fond memories. -EL

My sweet friend Ashley & me while we were in Gatlinburg last weekend

Halfway there!

After about nine hours in the car I made it to Richmond! Hanging with a great friend tonight after a few goodbyes, and off to PA tomorrow. I was so sad saying bye to Jacki, Sydney, & Taylor this morning (the Alpharetta Pattersons!), but I’m quite confident they’ll be among my first visitors. ๐Ÿ˜‰

GREAT breakfast at Flying Biscuit with Brooke.

I found this cute owl on the wall. I love owls so I may or may not copy this in the future...

Love her. So thankful for her friendship.

Rosalyn Kay: my host for the evening ๐Ÿ™‚

All in a day’s work & drive. So far so good, and I’m very excited to see Luke & Mandy & Emma tomorrow. More soon. -EL

Liza & Me on a Journey

Tomorrow morning I’ll be leaving Alpharetta for Virginia to stay the night, and then on to Pennsylvania and soon thereafter, NYC. Today was my last office day with Thousand Hills (I’m still working remotely for the next few weeks!) It was sad to say goodbye, but I am so excited to be hitting the road tomorrow.

The job hunt is officially ON! Overwhelmed & excited at the moment. I found this sign in Gatlinburg last weekend and I’m not sure why, but it just made me smile. This is a great place to start when looking for a job. ๐Ÿ™‚

More to come. Thanks for stopping by. -EL

PS–Liza is the name for my 2003 Toyota Camry. We’ve been so many lovely places together. ๐Ÿ™‚
